OUR PROJECTS: CHILD DEVElOPMENT
The project Ukraine Charity funds contribute to the development of an effective education system and support programmes and provide Ukrainian children with skills and opportunities to achieve their full potential.
Ukraine Charity is working together with Ukrainian author Serhiy Zhadan on a book review competition among students of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts. Students from middle and high school are invited to take part by choosing a book and writing a review in Ukrainian in the form of an essay, interview, etc. Entries must be original work of the candidates and will be evaluated by a panel of professional judges: literary critics, writers, literature teachers, etc. In order to help the participants deal with the task, video lessons will be prepared by a professional literary critic. The children will be able to find out more about what a book review is, what kind of reviews there are, how to write an interesting piece, how to be a book blogger, and other valuable tips. Since 2015, at the initiative of Olena Nizalova, Ukraine Charity has been fundraising for the "Kraplynka Centre for Educational Development and Social Inclusion," where children of refugee families from occupied territories in Donbas and Crimea enjoy wellness and educational activities, while their parents benefit from counselling, practical seminars and each other's support.
Kraplynka's main centre of operations is near Kyiv, and there children do arts and crafts, go swimming and sailing, and partake in Christmas and Easter celebrations. These activities help them overcome the trauma of war and resettlement. The centre's work has even been recognised by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. GoCamp is a new format of school day camps with intensive study of foreign languages. Using a specially developed programme, children learn to work in teams, communicate in a multicultural environment, think critically, and be tolerant to others.
The main goal is to educate a new young generation of active and conscious citizens of Ukraine, capable of lifelong learning, and prepared for the challenges of the 21st century, fluent in foreign languages and open to other cultures and experiences. The project was brought to us by the Ukrainian professionals at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the bank provided matching funds for all donations made. The “Children of Heroes” initiative brings children of fallen Ukrainian soldiers to spend one-to-two weeks during the summer at the Tarasivka camp in Weston-upon-Trent near Derbyshire, England.
During their stay, the children enjoy sporting activities such as biking, archery, football, martial arts and aerobics. They also travel to London for a tour of the city. In prior years, the kids visited the Houses of Parliament and the BBC broadcasting centre. The entire trip is also an opportunity for the children to learn English and connect with the large Ukrainian diaspora in the United Kingdom. Organised by Tanya Klymenko and the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM), this endeavour has brought 10-20 bereaving children to the UK each year since 2015. Regional CYM branches, the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) and Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain have also regularly supported this project. |
